Mac OS X Retrospect Tutorials

Here are a collection of retrospect tutorials made available from the Retrospect website and copied here for easy access.

Automatic Shutdown After Backup

(This software has only been tested under OS X 10.3 (Panther) with Retrospect 6.0 Client software.)

EMC Dantz Technical Support has created an AppleScript utility to shutdown the client following a backup.

To install the AppleScript: download the .dmg file for cShutdown. When you mount the image, you will see the cShutdown application. Double clicking will begin the install. There are certain requirements needed to run the cShutdown AppleScript:

  1. You will need to have the Retrospect Client software installed on the machine before you install cShutdown. If you do not have the Retrospect Client software installed, cShutdown will give an error and not install.
  2. You MUST have Administrator privileges on the machine you are installing cShutdown on. cShutdown will ask for you to put in an Administrator level password, and will not be able to install without it.
  3. OS X is required. This software will not work on OS 9 or earlier.

After you have started the installation of cShutdown and it has checked to make sure you have the Retrospect Client installed, the program will offer you a choice of Install, Uninstall, or Cancel. Once you have installed the program you do not need to restart the machine in order to have the program work. However, there are two requirements that MUST be met for cShutdown to work properly:

  1. You MUST be logged out of the computer. Do not turn off the computer, or put it to sleep. You should see the login window if you are logged out.
  2. A backup must have run on the machine. cShutdown checks for this every half hour. The backup must have run in the last hour for cShutdown to work.

Firewall Configuration

(Mac OS 10.2 and later)

This tutorial describes how to open port 497 for both TCP and UDP Packets with Mac OS 10.2.x.

Note: To backup any Retrospect client, your networking hardware MUST have port 497 open for both TCP and UDP packets.

Resetting The Password

This document is a “How to” for the AppleScript “change_Retroclient_password_II”. This utility is for a User or Administrator who has forgotten their Retrospect Client's password, or for those administering a backup that they did not set up.

The utility will reset ALL preferences for the Retrospect Client, including the name the computer shows up as on the network (which it reads from the System Preferences under Sharing) as well as the password.

To use the “change_Retroclient_password_II”, download the .dmg file and mount the image. Double click on the “change_Retroclient_password_II” compiled AppleScript in the mounted image and you will be warned that this script will reset Retrospect Client:

Accepting the script warning.

Next, you will be prompted for the Administrator's password on this computer:

Prompting for the admin password.

NOTE: The ‘Name’ above is just an example. You will need to use the name of a user with administrative rights on your computer. Typically this is the ONLY account on the computer.

Finally, the script will open up the Retrospect client and prompt you to Click the ‘On’ button on the Retrospect Client. Note that this dialog box may appear ‘behind’ the client.

Clicking on in the retrospect client.

NOTE: If the Retrospect Client does not open for some reason, you should open it at this point and click the on button.

Finally, Retrospect Client will prompt you to change the password. You will need to enter it twice, just as if you had installed Retrospect Client for the first time.

Setting the password.

Once this is done your client's Password and Preferences will be reset.

Note: Once you run this utility, you will need to notify us to remove and re-add you to the backup database.
