Short-term visitors to Tate Lab can connect their computers to the network, if they have a valid University of Minnesota internet account, or a Physics account.
For those without accounts, guest accounts are provided by the University. Staff and faculty can sponsor short-term wireless access for another person. The access expires at midnight after 4-5 days. Go to https://www.umn.edu/dirtools/sponsor-wireless for more information and to sponsor an account.
Requests for guest accounts for conferences can be made in a similar way, except a small charge applies. Full information on the types of wireless accounts, and the charge scale for conferences, is available at http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/info/wireless.html
If you have any particular questions or other special needs, contact net@physics.umn.edu.
To use the Physics network as a guest, simply associate to the “Physics” wireless network, or plug-in to a free network port.
After connecting, open a web browser– you should be redirected to our login page. After authenticating here, you will have full network access
General information about the wireless network is available here.
For cases where the 4-5 day guest account system is insufficient (say for longer-term visitors), faculty or staff can also register their guests' computer directly for our network for wired access. This is done on the same part of the Physics web site where you register your own computers: https://www.physics.umn.edu/resources/myphys/network/myhosts.html
In the host registration form, click the “more options” link to gain access to the additional settings which let you add a guest computer. This lets you register their computers network hardware address for up to 90 days.
