Purchasing Computer Equipment

Computer Equipment Vendors

PC desktop computers

We are happy to assist with your computer equipment purchases. You are welcome to discuss your needs with us, and we can provide advice and facilitate purchasing and computer setup for you.

For Windows and Linux workstations, we currently recommend this system from the Dell Techmart web site: http://www.techmart.umn.edu/

  • Dell Optiplex 755 “OET High End Desktop”
  • 2007FP monitor (we prefer this to the “widescreen” 2007FPW model)
  • Upgrade warranty to 5 years

Some local vendors we have used.

Laptops

Dell “OET Standard Laptop Latitude D630”, through Techmart.

Printers

For general use, we recommend HP Laserjet or Xerox Phaser printers.

HPs best prices can generally be found buying direct from HP's higher education online store.

Xerox can be purchased directly from the Xerox web site, or locally via QDS (http://www.Qdsinc.net).

Although for any type of printer, it's worth comparing prices at online stores, for example www.provantage.com

If you need support for your printer to be accessible from our central systems, please consult with us before buying. Printer features we require include a network connection which supports printing via port 9100, and PostScript support.

Some printer recommendations

Monochrome networked laser printers:

  • HP Laserjet 4250/N
  • Xerox 4150DN

Color network laser printers

  • Xerox Phaser 6180
  • Xerox Phaser 4180

Surplus Computer Hardware

This hardware is available for use anywhere within the physics department (for university-related use, not personal - the equipment does still remain university property). Email net@physics.umn.edu to find out more.

As well as the items in the list, we sometimes have spare systems (usually Pentium-4) installed with the Physics linux distribution. Please ask if interested.
