Connecting Windows Vista to PhysicsWPA

Before we begin

Accounts

Currently, physicsWPA is only supported with Physics accounts, NOT with university X500 accounts. We are investigating how to support X500 accounts. If you would like to try it, you must first activate Active Directory

3rd party wifi managers

Some computers come pre-configured with 3rd party wireless connection tools, such as Intel, ThinkPad, and others. The following directions assume use of the stock windows vista connection manager.

Step-by-step

Open the Start Menu by clicking the circle in the lower left hand corner. Then click on Control Panel: Start Menu

Click “Network and Internet”: Control Panel

Next, click “Network and Sharing Center”: Network

Next, click “Manage wireless networks”: Network and Sharing

Then click “Add”: Manage Wireless Networks

Now click “Manually create a network profile”: Manually Connect

In the “Manually connect to a wireless network” screen, type “PhysicsWPA” for network name, and select WPA2-Enterprise for security type. Choose “AES” for Encryption type, then click “Next”: Network Information

Next, click “Change connection settings”: Successfully Added

On the Wireless network properties page, uncheck “Connect to a more preferred network if available”, then click to the “Security” tab: Wireless Network Properties, Connection

Verify the security type and encryption settings, and then click “Settings”: Wireless Network Properties, Security

On the Protected EAP Properties dialog, check “Validate server certificate”, and “Connect to these servers”. Fill in 'www.physics.umn.edu'. Scroll down in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities box, and check “Thawte Premium Server CA”. Finally, click “Configure” at the bottom: Protected EAP Properties

In the little EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties pop-up, UNCHECK “Automatically use my Windows logon name and password”, and click OK, and OK two more times to close the open windows: EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties

In a few seconds, windows will pop up a notification in the lower right hand corner of your screen, telling you that the wireless network needs additional information. Click on the notification: Additional Information Needed

Enter your physics username and password into the “Enter Credentials” box. Do not enter anything for “Domain”. Click OK: Enter Credentials

If all goes well, the “network and sharing” control panel window will show you connected. Success!

In case of Trouble

If you have trouble getting it to work, bring your laptop down to S43 for assistance.
