As winter weather begins, there are several actions you can take to further protect yourself:
Wear layers of loose-fitting clothing
Stay hydrated (avoid caffeine and alcohol)
Keep a 72-hour disaster kit in your vehicle, including
Avoid travel in winter storms - if you must travel, tell someone your route and expected arrival time. Check the NM Dept of Transportation Road Information hotline by dialing 511.
Use proper ventilation when heating your home (to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning)
Stay tuned to your preferred weather source for the latest watches, warnings, and advisories
The following is a must to have
hat - a lot of heat escapes from your head in cold weather
jacket - keep wind/cold air out
warm underclothes - wool, polypro??? to keep perspriration away from your skin
mittens (preferred for real cold weather), or gloves (my $3 gloves look the same as good ones, but don't work)
pants (wind breaking kind)
socks (wool, Smart wool, …)
boots (must have for snowy roads) If you have to walk more than 10 minutes, you need them for extra warms, too. I got frost bite by biking in cold weather without boots. Now it hurts every cold day.
