Backups

The local hard drives of our centrally-managed Windows systems are not backed up, and should never be used for storage of personal files as they are subject to periodic cleaning or reinstallation. All user files must be stored on the network file server, where your personal files are backed up as part of that service.

Department Windows workstations can be found in staff and some faculty and student offices, and the student computing labs in Physics 137 and 469. We can also configure Windows systems for use in research labs or other offices - please feel free to discuss your needs with us.

We recommend Mozilla Thunderbird for email.

See our email setup guide for more details on setting up your Physics email account. While other mail programs are available on the Windows computers, Thunderbird is the only one we can offer complete help with.

Changing the Default Printer

All the major departmental printers are pre-installed on the Physics windows computers. However, the “default printer” is set to “Microsoft Office Document Image Writer”, which print to file, rather than to any real printer, so you will need to set your preferred default printer.

Windows Profile

Your Windows profile is the collection of files which stores various settings, such as internet explorer bookmarks, desktop background color, and so on. It also stores any files which you have placed on the desktop.

Since the entire profile is copied to and from the server every time you log in or out, Windows limits its size. On our systems, the maximum size is 60Mbytes. If it grows to be larger than this, Windows will not let you log out until you have reduced it below the limit.

A fairly wide selection of general-purpose applications are installed on the Windows systems

Some applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator have a limited number of network licenses available. The system will only allow a certain number of instances of these to run within the department at the same time.

You can use the program SecureCRT to connect to Unix and Linux systems using SSH. SSH should always be used instead of telnet - in fact most of our servers now have telnet switched off.

To run SecureCRT, either double-click on the SecureCRT icon on the desktop, or choose it from the Programs section of the Start Menu.

* At the current time we support only Windows XP.
	* We will periodically update the system to include all important updates for Windows and major applications.
	* The main hard drive is dedicated to the operating system and applications - no user data can be stored here.
	* Your home directory will be stored on the main Physics fileserver and mapped as drive Z: (and also as “My Documents”).
	* We don't support file sharing from workstations - shared data must be stored on a server.

An X server, Xming, is installed on most of our Windows systems. This lets you display window-based applications from remote Unix or Linux systems on your Windows screen. The best way to use it is in conjunction with SSH.

How To Run UNIX/Linux Programs in Windows

Find the XMing Launcher in the windows start menu:
