To find what printers are available to you, consult our list of print queues. As a general rule, each of the department-managed print queues is named after its room number.

After submitting a print job, you can check its status online by checking the print server jobs listing (this link will only work within Tate Lab).

Apple have changed the appearance of the Printer Setup Utility slightly in each version of Mac OS X, so these instructions may not exactly match what you see. To add a printer using Mac OS X,

	* open Printer Setup Utility, from the Utilities folder
 * click Add.
 * In the window that appears, select IP Printing from the pull-down menu, and for Printer Type, choose HP jetdirect.

Several network scanning devices are available: two HP Digital Sender in the Physics mail room (147) and reading room (216), and two Toshiba digital copiers in Astronomy and FTPI, and an HP multifunction Laserjet 4100MFP in the accounting office.

To scan using the Digital Sender

This is a touch-screen device - most or all interaction is through the screen.

Printing on the department-run Unix and Linux systems is covered elsewhere. These instructions refer to self-managed systems.

The simplest way to use the Physics print queues is to use CUPS print software on your Unix/Linux system. This is the default print system for most current Linux distributions.

Setting up Printers on Windows

The easiest way to access print queues using Windows (XP or later) is to use the “Add Printer” wizard.

Choose “Network printer” as the type of printer to add. Then type in the printer name as <\\PUBLIC\xxx>, where “xxx” is the name of the print queue - eg, <\\PUBLIC\431>. Browsing for the printer may not work, as the Windows browsing feature doesn't work reliably on a large network like ours.
