Update on Signal Separation (aka - foregrounds) - Clem * currently sets of maps based sims on NERSC. * various (seven) foreground models * 00 is just a toy model for sanity checks * 3 Pysm models. has AME, dust, free-free, and synchtron (heavily based on Planck component maps) * 91 is the default * 92 polarized AME, bit more complicated dust and synchtron * 93 is more complex dust * 96 MHD model from galactic magnetic field (simulated realization, not observed galaxy) * cuts off at ell of few hundred * 98 multilayer dust model. add synchtron from PySM. * 99 mulitfrequency model from paper (see Clem's link) * Maps have either small r or no r added. * Multiple groups analyzing the final maps to reconstruct r and clean. * Progress has been slow. * Soumen using NILC * Belen using SMICA * Mateo using Commander * Stalled out. Spectral behavior varies across large pixel size needed for commander. Get residuals at PICO noise levels. * working on getting Oslo group to run Commander on this also. They have v2 of Commander. * Soumen made most progress: * see his presentation: [[https://zzz.physics.umn.edu/ipsig/foregroundstelecon20180830|Foreground telecon with Soumen's latest results]] * slide 5: output power spectra. Titles tells how de-lensing is being faked. upper left is full lensing. upper right is .35, lower left is .15, lower right is .03. * SH: PICO should get to ~ 15% (lower left) * green is residual foregrounds. * 00 model works good (trivial) * slide 6 (PySM 1, model 91). foreground still cleaned. * 92, 93 also ok. * 96, cut off at ell ~300 is becuase model has no foreground. cleaning does ok. * 99 (slide 10). still foreground limited. * So less pessimistic foregrounds work with NILC method. * all this has been done on a single realization. Will be done with various CMB skies to test robustness. * Only have single realization of foreground models (since those are based in reality) * number of realizations that can be done is unknown. Algorithms are computationally heavy. * for report. qualitative 'this works in most cases' Don't yet have full many realization statistics. * Graca will take spectra and make a ML value of r. Haven't seen any results yet. * SH: how do we show all the work for interested parties? Beyond inclusion in the PICO report. Can we post an 'Appendix' someplace and link to it? Can't have an actual appendix in report. * CP: Would be good. S4 CMB has ~ 10 page appendix. * SH: We'll consider this. Needs to be prepped in ~ 1-2 month timescale. Could be a white paper or just appendix posted someplace. Recommendations for external reviewers (deliver report end of Oct.) * desired perspectives: broad astrophysics; few within the field; Orbital vs sub-orbital; technical expertise * Names proposed so far * US: Page, Dodelson, Bennett, Hinshaw, Ruhl, Runyan * International: Desert, DeBernardis, * suggested in telecon: Francios, Ganga, * Any outside CMB field? SH: Josh Frieman? --sure. * Any survey groups? JB: Dave Spurgel. MS: Anze Slosar SH: Martin White, * AT: good to people with broad perspective. experience with mission proposals is a plus. This document is essentially a mission proposal. * Jamie Bock? (is formally on EC, so more 'neighbor' than external) * SH: People outside field are especially useful. Surveys? other space missions? * CP: Anyone from Euclid? * Ichiro (Andrian?) Klapsful? (sp?) * JB: A Euclid group that does 'external data'. **Will look for a name from that group.** * SH: LSST connections? NB: Eric Wiezers, Phil Marshal (spokes-people), Rachael Mandlebaum (DESC people) * JB: Michael Strauss ==== Status of Probe Report ==== Status of report {{:private:picoreport.pdf|Current status}}(All): * Intro: Dan and Rapheal have added text. DG: Think RF is adding more. **Will check in with RF, 9/20** SH: will start to work on it myself as well. Broad view of all science is goal? DG: yep. * SH: Nick and Colin have a look and suggest/add topics on their science topics. NB: **Will work on over next week** SH: very broad overview. DG: add 1 paragraph of text. CH: **will also work on over 1 week timescale** * 2.2.1: SH: Rapheal is main person. SH editing, **will have comments over next week.** * Neutrino mass, SH: Any conversation with van Engel? Anything needed? DG: not sure. AvE: blurb is farther down. could be moved up to here. * SH: have Rapheal be aware that Alex has text if RF wants it. DG: **Will follow up with Rapheal** * Cosmic structure (2.2.2) * need figure **A/I NB to make figure** timescale 1 week. * CH: Can we just say tau at cosmic variance is obvious? NB: we haven't simmed yet. CH: can we just refer to sigma(r) #'s? and say tau is obvious. * SH: Do we get cosmic variance even at 0.9 uK arcmin? NB: don't know. Would very much expect we'd be fine when comparing to other experiments. * SH: **Will check in with Stephen Feeney.** just for insurance. * Alex: coordinating with Marcel. He will project from data used for figure to get cross correlations. * Marcel: have started running this. ** Done in 1 week** * galaxy formation / SZ. NB added text. CH added figure. * SH: More text? NB: that is intro. will add about clusters, figure and kSZ. **1 week for NB/CH** * Galactic (DC) * DC: Laura's polishing text. **cutting to 3 pages over 1 week**. telecon with WG next Mon/Tues. * DC: Next week good time for STM update. * Complementarity. (charles) * SH: Table is space heavy. Reduce this? * CL: **Will look at cutting text and formatting.** How much space is appropriate? SH: need reduce by 1/2 to 2/3. * Foregrounds * SH: **will change title** Jacques is cutting down section. * Systematics -- Brendan back in ~ 2 weeks. * Measurement requirements. SH added text. **AT to review and comment, 1 week timescale for first look** * SH this may come in under the 2 pages allocated. * rest are behind JPL firewall. * **Deadline for full draft at end of September!**
