Physics Computing: Contact Information

Graham Allan and Alex Schumann make up the support team for the Physics and Astronomy computer systems. They support the physics and astronomy servers, administrative staff, the network, and linux and windows workstations.

Questions & Requests

  • First, check this support website - your question may already be answered here.
  • Send email to net@physics.umn.edu - This will create a help ticket which we will use to track your issue. It also allows us to track trends and recurring problems, and ensure we collect the information we need to process your request.
  • If you can't send email, contact us using this contact form - another way to get your question in the ticket system.
  • Phone us at 6-1139, or look for us in room S43. Please consider that this method provides no tracking for you or for us and does not allow us to prioritize our work as we should. As such, this method is strongly discouraged except for emergencies or instances where there is no better method.

Urgent Problems and Escalation

In case of serious problems -

  • Anyone experiencing system problems should call our general support number 612-626-1139.
    • If part-time staff are available to take the problem report, but are unable to resolve it themselves, they will escalate by calling Graham and Alex (cellphones).
    • If there is no reply, leave a brief but clear message. The voicemail message will be transcribed by Google Voice and sent to us, both to our ticket system and as text messages to Graham and Alex's cellphones.
    • Ron Poling and Julie Murphy also have Graham and Alex's direct cellphone numbers and will call (at their discretion) to make sure the problem is known.

University Systems

For issues with university systems, such as Enterprise systems (Peoplesoft, etc), the wireless network, or central email system, please call the OIT help desk at 1-HELP (612-301-4357).
