Campuses:
This is an old revision of the document!
The system and user home areas of the centrally-supported UNIX and Linux systems are backed up daily. Daily and weekly snapshots are available in /backup/by_date in case you need to recover files. A backups shortcut is also provided under both GNOME and KDE which points to this directory.
Older files may need to be recovered from tape.
Unix/Linux systems do also contain many (usually project-specific) data areas; it's important to note that these are not centrally backed up - please make your own arrangements for these areas.
Note
The purpose of these backups is primarily disaster recovery - you are still responsible for not deleting important files! However, if you do lose important data, we will of course do our best to recover it.
