Backups on Unix

Home Directories

Note

The purpose of these backups is primarily disaster recovery - you are still responsible for not deleting important files! However, if you do lose important data, we will of course do our best to recover it.

The system and user home areas of the centrally-supported UNIX and Linux systems are backed up daily. Daily and weekly snapshots are available in /backup/by_date in case you need to recover files. A Backups shortcut is also provided under both GNOME and KDE which points to this directory.

Older files may need to be recovered from tape. Tape backups are currently made monthly and retained for 6 months.

Project-specific data disks

Unix/Linux systems do also contain many (usually project-specific) data areas; it's important to note that these are not centrally backed up - please make your own arrangements for these areas.
