For Prospective Students

Matriculation procedures

If we have offered you financial support, and if you have decided to matriculate to Minnesota, please check the following site to find out what else you will need to do to complete the process. http:// zzz.physics.umn.edu/ doctor_physics/ matriculation

Fellowships and other supports

  • Several of the most qualified applicants will receive Fellowships which will allow them to focus on their studies and research in their first year or two. To be nominated, you are strongly encouraged to apply to the department by Dec 15. The sources of Fellowships include the Graduate School and endowment in the department. The college (2007) as well as the 3M corp. (2007, 2008) provide Fellowships some years.
  • If you are a member of an underrepresented group (ethnically, genderwise, or in some other ways), we have additional fellowship opportunities for you. Please provide us with a narrative statement (no longer than two pages) on how your background, experiences, and achievements will contribute to the University's goal of promoting excellence through diversity. If you have submitted a Diversity Statement to The Graduate School online application, you have fulfilled the statement requirement but please let us know that you have already done this.
  • Most other new students will be supported by teaching assistantship.
  • To facilitate a serious research involvement in the summer after the 1st and 2nd year, all students with well-thought-out research plans will be supported by a Fellowship over the summer.
  • When a student becomes productive in his/her research, many of the professors will be able to support him/her as a research assistant. This happens typically in the third year of graduate studies.
  • We have several departmental fellowships for those students of various stages of research career who are making good progress in their research. Beside recognizing their accomplishments, this encourages their advisers to support the students fully on research. See Departmental Fellowships for more details.
  • Our top graduates are nominated to receive Dissertation Fellowship from the Graduate School in their final year. Typically, 3 to 5 students receives such Fellowships every year.
  • Our students will receive departmental support when they give a research presentation at a conference to help them network with people in the field. See Financial support for research-related travel. for more details.
  • For fellowships and grants (travel) outside the department, see Links
  • Some of the information below which is for our current students may be of interest to you, and you are welcome to browse through it.
