Physics firewall and proxies

Physics runs a firewall configuration which blocks all unwanted incoming connections from both the university and the internet in general, and also controls traffic between the internal subnets.

It is possible to set firewall exceptions for specific systems, where research needs require it. If you have such a need, talk to us about it, and we'll help figure out a solution.

Wireless access for short-term Guests or Conferences

For visitors without UofM internet accounts, there are two ways to access the wireless network.

Wired - PAN and Tate

Wired connections in PAN and Tate are provided by University networking (Etherjack).

If your computer is registered but you are not getting a connection, then first check for a link light (usually on the network socket of your computer). This will tell us if the jack you are using is active (you could also try another jack, if available).

Physics Network Registration and Configuration

The wired network jacks in the Physics-occupied areas of Physics & Nanotechnology and Tate Hall are operated by the University.

To connect any device to the Physics network, you must first register it and agree to abide by University security policies.
