Synchronize your Sims

  • Install same GEANT4 version and identify a common physics list. The version we will use is 9.4.4 with the “shielding” physics list and the new MuNuc process. In order to make sure that this is indeed the same, Anthony will send around a first pass version after discussing it with Dennis and Mike at SLAC. This email exchange will iterate until a common set is decided upon.
  • The participating institutions will need to install it:
    • Brown (Monica and Dave)
    • USD (Chao)
    • Minnesota (Villano)
    • Livermore (Melinda)
  • Install latest version of FLUKA at Los Alamos
    • Empl share with Raul
  • Run a subset of Neutron Yield Benchmark Geometries to validate new installations. (see below for the details of the ongoing AARM study on muon-induced neutron production) . Suggest using the 10 GeV, 1000 GeV runs for liquid scintillator and lead.

Create dictionary of terms and methods (Prisca)

  • General Definitions, e.g. hit, event, single, multiple, neutron flux,
  • Same definitions as related to specific experiments (threshold for a single, granularity for multiples, etc)
  • “Observables” to be compared between experiments (veto rate, efficiency, background rate)
  • How will livetime be calculated?

Establish standard "input" for Homestake Sims

  • Chao will run Homestake muon parameterization through rock to produce files of neutrons and secondary particles. He cannot do this until he has the most recent version of Geant4 with the agreed-upon physics list and updated MuNuc
  • Send the files to the various institutions or post them in a centralized location
  • Each institution runs their experimental set up using these inputs, including FLUKA.
  • A simple, universal water shield sim with a sensitive detector in the middle can provide a validation step. This geometry needs to be defined.
  • It is at a different depth and smaller installation and therefore does not use Chao's input files.
  • Comparison should be made between the Soudan spectra and multiplicity via direct propagation and the parameterized neutron spectra currently in use.
  • Validation of the MC physics can be obtained, using the same Geant4 version and lists.

There are several "frameworks" at the moment. It was decided not to worry about that. Chao's Homestake framework is most likely going to be absorbed into LUXSim. Use what you have.
