Steering Committee Meeting (Nov 18, 2019)

Convener Nominations

Process: We need to choose 2 names for each of the 10 frontiers, looking for a balance. Do not bother with the topical subgroup nominations. In principle, the co-conveners should be 1 young and 1 old. However, it should also (where relevant) be 1 theorist and 1 experimentalist. Plus we should try our best for appropriate diversity. Recognize that this is an impossible task and we will just do our best.

Assign people to shepherd the nominating process to each of the 10 Frontiers

  • Energy Frontier (Tulika Bose, Joe Incandela) with chill@physics.osu.edu, tmptait@gmail.com
  • Cosmic Frontier (Glennys Farrar, Gary Horowitz, Prisca Cushman) with profumo@ucsc.edu, diehl@fnal.gov
  • Frontiers in Neutrino Physics (André de Gouvêa, Elizabeth Worcester) with schol@phy.duke.edu
  • Frontiers in Rare Processes and Precision Measurements (Krishna Kumar, Young-Kee Kim) with slstone@syr.edu, rhbob@fnal.gov
  • Theory Frontier (Natalia Toro, Tao Han) with denisovd@bnl.gov
  • Underground Facilities and Infrastructure (Prisca Cushman) with John.Orrell@pnnl.gov, alysia.marino@colorado.edu
  • Accelerator Science and Technology Frontier (Sergei Nagaitsev, Sarah Cousineau)
  • Instrumentation Frontier (Richard Van Kooten, Bob Tschirhart) with rusack@umn.edu, matthew.szydagis@gmail.com
  • Computational Frontier (Fernanda Psihas, Mirjam Cvetic) with ssekula@physics.smu.edu
  • Community Involvement (André de Gouvêa, Elizabeth Simmons) with rafael@purdue.edu, sbutalla2012@my.fit.edu

Jobs of convener selection chairs

  • Extract the names of the people nominated for overall frontier convener from the google spreadsheet for your frontier and make a new google spreadsheet in another location (for confidentiality) with columns for Name, Demographics, Duplication, Suitability Comments. You will send the link to the rest of us, once you are finished with the jobs shown below.
  • Write defining demographics near each name (old/young/theorist/experimentalist/male/female).
  • Go to the other sheets in the original google spreadsheet and see if any nomination from your list were also nominated for another frontier. If so, mark it in the appropriate column.
  • Eliminate any unsuitable candidates by strike-thru (do not remove totally).
  • Rather than grading the rest, just comment on their suitability for the job in the comments column of your new spreadsheet.
  • Next considering the demographics and your personal knowledge of candidates, see if you can find reasonable pairs or triplets. Put them on another sheet in your spreadsheet and include comments.
  • Once this is done, invite the rest of the exec to your spreadsheet and ask them to make comments on your list.
  • Once we have all had a chance to comment, we will need to meet by phone to evaluate our lists together.
  • We will identify the top pairs or sets of three and send email to them asking a variety of questions, e.g.
    • You have been nominated to serve as a co-convener for the XXXX frontier with the following job description… would you be willing to serve, if chosen? To help with the selection process, could you answer the following questions… etc. In other words, we can still ask for more information to help us make the final decision. In this 2-tiered approach, we do not have tons of time, so let's get the first set of bullet points done over the next week. My idea would be to ask each candidate that passes this first round to provide a shortform CV and a personal statement as to why they want to do this job and think they would be good at it. Limited to no more than one page of 12 pt.
