Water Shield

  1. Description/Name: Water Shield in the FAARM Facility at the 4850' level
  2. Planned use (be specific):
    1. Primary function: provide common first-level gamma and neutron shielding for screening detectors and ultra-sensitive immersion tank
    2. Temporary and permanent storage: will house screeners of various sensitivities, including alpha-beta counters, HPGe detectors, immersion tank
    3. Sample and detector handling: accommodations for alpha-beta screeners, HPGe screeners, immersion tank
    4. Jigs, fixtures, scaffolds, etc. necessary
      1. Monorail for hoisting samples into water tank
    5. E & O activities
  3. Occupancy:
    1. Steady: See occupancy listed under screening spaces
    2. Peak: See occupancy listed under screening spaces
  4. Adjacencies (list/distance): See adjacencies listed under screening spaces
  5. Space size (gsf and/or WxLxH): approximately 2330 m^3 (excluding space beneath first floor which is approximately 1160 m^3)
    1. 3 m shielding thickness
    2. 2 m space between shield and cavern for egress and pipe
