S4 Review Info

The presentations should include a report on the status, progress, and future plans for your project. These should address, but not necessarily be limited to, the following:

  • scientific goals and associated design criteria;
  • deliverables and technical progress during the past year;
  • cost, schedule and staffing issues;
  • plans and deliverables for the next year;
  • future plans, which should include:
  • the remaining work required to arrive at a baseline-quality design;
  • a rough estimate of the resources this will require;
  • the means by which you intend to seek support for continued design work after the S4 funds are exhausted;
  • your response to recent events at the agencies related to DUSEL, including any siting options you might be considering; and
  • factors that will inform your decision-making on the direction your project will take over the next year and beyond.

3. The format will basically follow that of last year’s review, with the addition this year of the discussion related to your future plans. A charge will be drafted during the next week or two, but the information above should allow you to begin putting together your presentations.

4. The panel will base their review on the presentations you will make, and on your annual report covering the past year’s work. Please make sure you have all of this material in to me by Monday, August 8, 2011 (please cc Ramona Winkelbauer, rwinkelb@nsf.gov). We will establish a web page from which the panel will access these files. The annual reports should be submitted via Fastlane in the usual way; anything you can do to get the reports in early would help facilitate things. Thanks.

5. Note that Tuesday morning of the review will be dedicated to evaluating the physics program proposed in the DUSEL Preliminary Design Report submitted in May by U.C. Berkeley. The S4 PIs are welcome to attend the presentations by the DUSEL project team on Tuesday morning, if they wish.
