Agenda for radiogenic working group meeting on Jun 13, 2013

  1. Quick review of our meeting goals — Dongming
  2. Report interests from individuals — All
  3. task assignment:
    • Calculation of (alpha, n) neutron yield from Th228 and Radon decay chain
    • Compare cross sections from EMPIRE vs TALYS; Compare USD web database with SOURCES
    • Validation of neutron yield in materials
    • Make (alpha, n) reaction work in Geant4
    • Radiogenic background (external) data sheet for Homestake Mine

Meeting notes

Participants: Dongming Mei, Chao Zhang, Wenzhao Wei, Jason Goon, Silvia Scorza, Hang Qiu, Jodi, Ben.

Summary notes:

Dongming summarized the goals for our working group with the emphasis on the following aspects: 1) (alpha, n) neutron yield calculations; 2) evaluate the non-equilibrium effects. Th228 seems to be a good start for the evaluation; 3) implement the (alpha, n) neutron into Geant4; 4) collect more background data such as gamma, neutrons in the experiment hall. Make them available to the public. 4) investigate the potential radiogenic emission of high energy gamma ray(>10MeV). The sources may come from some rare processing such as neutron capture, etc.

Jodi's group is working on the calculation of (alpha, n) neutron yield for common-used materials through SOURCES. Cu, PMT glass, Ti, Poly and so on have been investigated. Dongming suggested to do one more calculation on Teflon. Chao commits to provide the composition of Teflon.

Another common interest is to track down the reason which caused the discrepancy between USD web data base and SOURCES. As the first step, Chao agrees to provide the cross section data of alpha interacting with Copper. Then Silvia will run it through SOURCES to nail down if the difference coming from the cross section itself.

For the validation of (alpha, n) calculation, Chao agrees to send a reference to Jodi's group to see if we can start from there.

Assignment taking:

  • (alpha, n) calculation and adding Th228 and radon decay chain — Chao
  • compare USD web database and SOURCE — Chao, Jodi, Silvia, Hang
  • validation of (alpha, n) calculation — Chao, Jodi
  • implement the reaction to Geant4 — we prefer Geant4 guys to handle it
  • Radiogenic background (external) data sheet for Homestake Mine — Iseley, Jason, Wenzhao
