Linux and Unix version support (draft)

Comments are welcome on the support strategy outlined below.

Linux

We support the following Linux versions

  • Scientific Linux 4
    • “legacy” version, only supported where research project code demands it.
    • i386 (32-bit) only.
    • now not recommended for desktop workstations.
    • some third party applications such as Adobe Flash are no longer supported for this version.
  • Scientific Linux 5
    • “mainstream” version for long-term support
    • i386 and X86_64
    • Some libraries and desktop applications (eg java plugin for firefox) may not be available on 64-bit (X86_64) installs.
  • Fedora Core 9/10
    • “cutting-edge” version
    • probably for X86_64 only
    • short support lifecycle and rfequent updates.
    • research code compatibility is the users responsibility.

Tru64 Unix

  • Tru64 5.1B-6
    • This is now not supported for any end-user applications which are available on linux. Eg Mathematica, LaTeX, email, text-editing, etc.
    • Provided for legacy code (for example, applications based on alpha fortran code) only.
