To connect any device to the Physics network, you must abide by our network security policy.

Unlike most other buildings on campus, the wired network jacks in Tate Lab, and the Physics-occupied areas of Physics & Nanotechnology are operated by Physics IT rather than the University.

To register a computer for use on the Physics network, follow these steps:

1. First, find the network hardware address of your computer. You can find this using these instructions from OIT.
2. Scroll past OIT's instructions on registering your computer, and follow steps in the section on DHCP Ethernet Configuration.
3. Register your computer for the Physics network using our online Network Registration Tool.

The network jacks in Tate Lab are separate from phone jacks. By default most network jacks are active for use.

Phone and network jacks in Physics/Nanotechnology are shared. Each wallplate generally has 3 jacks in offices, or 4 jacks in labs. OIT always uses the first jack in a wallplate for phone service, although which wallplate will vary between rooms. We are using the following default rule to wire data jacks in PaN:

• faculty, staff and postdoc offices: second and third jacks in each wall plate, ie AB, AC, AE, AF (and AH, AI, AK, AL if present)
• graduate student offices: second jack in each wall plate, ie AB AE AH AK AN AQ AT AW
• labs: By default, second and third jack in each 4-jack wall plate.

You can use the network tools to list your currently registered network devices, change or remove them, or add additional ones.

If you need a fixed address, you should still register it using the online tool. You might need a static address for a server or other devices such as network printers.

In the registration tool, check the box to request a static address. We will register the hostname and assign an IP address for you. You should still configure your computer to use DHCP; our network will provide the assigned fixed address.
