Software Overview

Site licenses

For university-owned computers

The School of Physics and Astronomy has site licenses for some useful software packages, and other licenses are available campus-wide at no cost. Some of the highlights are:

  • For information on software available through the University, including Microsoft Windows, Office, and Acrobat Pro, start at the IT@UMN software page.
  • The College of Science and Engineering licenses Mathematica, for Windows, Macintosh, and many Unix platforms, valid for any university-owned computer within the department.
  • We have a College-wide license for Matlab, for Windows, Mac OS and Unix.
  • The College also licensed LabView both for instructional and research use.
  • We participate with some other departments in a license for Origin

For personally-owned computers

Mathematica and Matlab are available to undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Science and Engineering. More details at:

IT Labs also has a subscription to MSDNAA (Microsoft Developers Network Academic Alliance). For details on all resources available through CSELabs, visit their web site:

Distribution

Many software packages can be downloaded from the downloads area of the web site. You have to be logged in to the site as an internal user of the department to access this area. Most packages are available as ISO images, ready to be burned to CD.
