Software Overview

Site licenses

For university-owned computers

The School of Physics and Astronomy has site licenses for some useful software packages, and other licenses are available campus-wide at no cost. Some of the highlights are:

  • The University has a campuswide agreement for Windows and Mac OS upgrades, and for Microsoft Office.
  • The University of Minnesota has a campus-wide license for Symantec Antivirus for both Windows and Macintosh.
  • The School licenses Mathematica, for Windows, Macintosh, and many Unix platforms, valid for any university-owned computer within the department.
  • We also have a department-wide license for Matlab, for Windows, Mac OS and Unix.
  • A selection of multimedia software including Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat is available to faculty members via the Digital Media Center's Faculty Toolkit - note that this has to be obtained individually by each faculty member from the DMC; we can't assist you with this.

ADCS have some information on more site-licensed software, some of which is free, some of which has first-time purchase and/or annual subscription costs.

For additional Microsoft products not covered under the campus agreement, check the Microsoft Academic Select program, offered through ADCS.

For personally-owned computers

Some software such as Symantec Antivirus, and Windows and Office upgrades, may be available to faculty, staff or currently-registered students. Please check the ADCS web site for more information:

Mathematica and Matlab are available to undergraduate and graduate students in the Institute of Technology. More details at:

IT Labs also has a subscription to MSDNAA (Microsoft Developers Network Academic Alliance). For details on all resources available through ITLabs, visit their web site:

Distribution

Most large software packages can be downloaded from the downloads area of the web site. You have to be logged in to the site as an internal user of the department to access this area. Most packages are available as ISO images, ready to be burned to CD.
