This fellowship has been established to encourage qualified students to focus on research. If you have passed the preliminary oral, or are planning to take it soon, you are particularly encouraged to apply. You should also apply if you are in the earlier stage of your graduate school career, have identified your research adviser and have produced a solid research plan. The amount of award is equal to a 1/4-time appointment with tuition benefits.

To apply, Email the following materials to Abby Schraufnagel (grad@physics.umn.edu) by Dec. 10 if you are interested in getting this fellowship in the spring.

• A research plan for the next year (written in collaboration with your adviser),
• A statement by your advisor about your potential strengths in doing research
• A statement of commitment of support from your adviser (more details below),
• A transcript.

The final selections will be made based on the promise of excellent PhD research. Some of the qualities that characterize this promise are: initiative, determination, persistence, organization, creativity, ingenuity, physics and technical knowledge, and ability to work productively with others. It is anticipated that about 10 fellowships will be offered over the next 12 months.

At the end of the Fellowship period, you will write a one-page report detailing the progress you have made in your research and send it to Abby Schraufnagel.

This one semester Fellowship is for all graduate students who will be finishing their PhD dissertation within the next ~18 months. All applicants to the Graduate School Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships (DDF) will be automatically considered for this Fellowship. Any other candidates who are interested in this Fellowship should submit application materials (See here!).

For the fall semester, submit your application by June 30, for the spring semester, Nov 1, and for the summer, April 1.

This Fellowship is given to an outstanding early research career student based on the completeness of the research plan, strong research record, and good academic standing. Your research plan submitted with your progress report in March constitutes your application.
