Homestake Meeting Minutes, 06/01/18

Attending:

Agenda:

  • Next Meeting: in 2 months or so. If need arises, will organize an ad-hoc meeting on a Friday.
  • Data analysis topics
    • Data corrections, frame production (Gary/Daniel/Pat)
      • Daniel: should check that IRIS data is correct (swapping north and east channels). Will contact Gary and look at the data.
    • Event catalog (Gary/Ross)
    • Radiometer updates (Pat, Andrew)
    • Parameter estimation for Rayleigh and Love (Pat)
    • Teleseismic events and Wiener filtering (Daniel, Michael)
    • Very-long-periods (Ross)
    • Velocity from noise correlations (Daniel)
      • Model selection?
    • Pull together all velocity measurements to start making comparisons (all)
  • Papers
    • Homestake Array Summary paper:
      • Leads: Vuk, Gary, Victor
      • Submitted to Seism. Research Lett.: Still waiting… Vuk to ping them again…
  • Active excitation overview paper
    • Leads: Gary, Ross
    • Others: Victor, Daniel,…
    • Gary could try to present something in July.
  • Surface Active Excitation
    • Leads: Victor, Boise
    • Others: Gary, Ross
  • Underground Active Excitation:
    • Lead: Gary, Ross
  • Parameter estimation for the Rayleigh and Love eigenfunctions (amplitude vs depth dependence): Draft
    • Leads: Pat, Daniel
    • Also contributing: Victor, Vuk, Levi
    • Target: BSSA
    • Pat: decided to include both Rayleigh and Love pieces, Victor wrote abstract, Daniel wrote introduction, Pat copied his work from thesis. Making changes for BSSA format.
    • Victor: paper should follow the abstract.
    • Two plots, one for Rayleigh and one for Love, with several panels (one panel for each frequency). Include both Pat's and Daniel's predictions, along with data points. Daniel and Pat will work on making these, and making them legible.
    • Move some of the data analysis details into the appendix (or supplementary information).
    • Pat will renormalize the Love waves separately from the Rayleigh, so Love waves would be normalized to 1 at the surface.
    • Victor/Vuk: agrees.
    • Victor: BSSA have both an appendix and supplementary info option.
    • Daniel: Appendix might be more appropriate for MCMC details. Victor/Vuk agrees.
    • Vuk:Time-scale?
    • Victor would prefer to push this out, since we are very close.
    • Pat and Daniel discussed this, would also like to push it through. Will try to get it ready for submission over 2-week time-scale.
    • Pat: will have to go through the LIGO P&P internal review process, which takes a week or two.
    • Victor: can we finish it in 1 week?
    • Pat and Daniel agree.
  • Estimating directional and modal composition of the seismic noise. (Pat, Levi, Vuk)
    • Leads: Pat, Vuk, Levi
    • Vuk: Pat has done much work on the radiometer and has written it up in his thesis. Can turn it into a paper. Since Pat will be traveling and then starting a new position, Vuk can try to make this adjustment to a paper. Will need help from Victor, Daniel, and Gary to pitch it correctly for a geo journal.
    • Victor: will write an abstract or outline, so that we are on the same page regarding what the paper will cover.
    • Vuk agrees. Will prepare the latex skeleton in the dropbox.
    • Pat will circulate his thesis.
  • Wiener filter application
    • Leads: Jan, Michael
    • Latest version: Draft.
    • Daniel: worked with Victor and Michael, converging to a draft they like. No conclusions or plots have changed, only adjusting the paper to the geophysics community. Time for other authors to read it. Time-scale: mature draft, hope to have feedback over the next week, so that we can proceed with submission.
    • Two parts of the paper: estimating velocities, and Wiener filtering. Tried to motivate them both as relating to precision with which we can describe the ambient field. More motivation added to the paper.
    • Tried to related Wiener section to geophysics, talked about variable seismic speeds that Wiener analysis gives.
    • There is still a GW section, Vuk/Jan and others to comment if this is sufficient and appropriate.
    • Vuk: should give a clear alert to everyone to request replies/comments in 1 week time-scale.
    • Target: Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth
    • Victor: currently the paper is geophysics oriented, but includes a discussion on GW. Maybe should think about how to better balance this and connect it better.
    • Vuk: will try…
  • Teleseismic EQs and near-surface scattering
    • Leads: Daniel, Victor
  • Time-variable velocity changes
    • Lead: Victor, not started yet
  • Very low frequency harmonics (Ross)
  • 3D PDF of Homestake geometry - draft for active source experiment paper
