Telecon Notes 20180207

Attendance: Lloyd, Julian, Amy, Shaul, Dan, Nick, Dave, Hannes

Notes by: Karl

Agenda:

Notes

May workshop:

  • program sheet cleaned up
  • added: neutrinos, primordial mag fields (place holder for additional fundamental physics)
  • Dan: Panel about session at end of fundamental physics?
    • Shaul: red section. Whatever we or moderator decide to do. Format is open.
    • Dan: part of the issue is what targets is PICO best suited to. Discussion to pull out ideas of good targets would be useful.
    • Lloyd: Good idea. Mark Kowalski to moderate this? Or someone younger?
      • Shaul: Lloyd could? LK: but drawing others in is better.
      • Dan: Joel Meyers could moderate. Or Jens? (he was more spectrometer). Someone with broad experience and without a horse in the race would be good.
      • Lloyd: Can we invite a handful of people?
        • Dan: Sure, will work with Raphael and make a list. People for a panel.
        • Rob Cauldwell
  • Extragalactic science. thoughts?
    • Nick: short intro talk to put in context?
    • Shaul: Sure. Who to talk? Nick: I could do this instead. And set connection to S3/S4.
    • Lloyd: Agree. And get new person for thermodynamic processes talk?
      • Nick: yes. or replace with SZ talk. (Jim Bartlett possible person) Probing CGM with SZ. Similar in that still measuring pressure and density of galaxies.
    • Shaul: looks good, slots filled. What about discussion time?
      • Nick: Depends on goal of discussion. If about report we should have PICO people. If looking for new idea then go outside PICO.
      • Shaul: more enthusiastic about open ended. Opportunity to get new ideas.
      • Nick: Names, Elliot Quatris, Aaron Parsens (21cm), Martin White or Uros ?? (high ell). These are senior people. Andrian Liu more junior. Steve Firlineto, Marcel, Colin H., Lindsey Glean
  • Shaul: General question. Pick mod + panel (more official) or invite these people and just have them present (less formal).
    • Lloyd: More formal gets more input out of people. Dan: Asking people to think outside what they normally do. Since asking for work, nice to give them a title/position. Less formal is harder to get people to prepare.
    • Shaul: So need to converge on list of 4-5 names for each panel. Dan/Raphael/Lloyd (Fundamental), Nick/Lloyd (EG science) * Galactic science * Dave: Looks reasonable. Depends on availability of course. * Shaul: What about panel names? and structure * Dave: Terry Jones is local. Will consider. Dave to think of names with Laura, 1 week timescale * Shaul: Maybe names like Giles, Darren who have been interested but busy. * Technology/Systematics * Combined these too. Would discuss the Systematics group's primary issues they identified. 3 issues were flagged. * Technology talks reasonable? * Hannes: Looks fine to me. * Shaul/Hannes** will designate moderator and panel. They have some names already. Work with Brendan.
  • Last 1/2 day. This may be too long. Opinions?
    • Nick: vote for 2 days. Would have to leave early if 2.5 days.
    • Shaul: we'll see what fills this, how important it is.
    • Foregrounds, still watching the group's work develop. Then this will be more clear.
    • Post foregrounds, Everything Shaul removed from earlier in program.
      • removed S4, balloons, LiteBIRD
      • anything about how to connect to decadal?
      • Lloyd: Do we need to discuss connection to decadal?
        • Shaul: Do we have space or mandate to discuss connection to other issues (for decadal) in NASA report?
        • Shaul: Could do 2nd white paper for decadal. Maybe a discussion on this is useful to decide exactly that. What is useful in addition to NASA report.
          • Last decade's report did discuss TD, balloons, much more comprehensive view. Was 2 reports, ~100 page EPIC plus 25 page community plan.
        • Lloyd: even in report there are some connections to ground. at least “what can't be done”
        • Shaul: So discussion of what to include in report in terms of what requires space and what doesn't?
          • Lloyd: yes, that's the suggestion. Shaul: makes sense, and needs to be addressed in report. So discussion makes sense.
        • Shaul: Probably need a panel of 3-4 to lead this.
          • Dan: Names?
          • Shaul: John Carlstrom (S4), Lyman Page, Scott Dodalson (slight outsider, science crossover useful), Bill Jones
          • Lloyd: Experimentalists best. John Rule ??. Shaul moderates? (Shaul: can, but anyone mentioned could.)
          • Julian: Susanne (S4 and SO), Joe Dunkley (science crossover)
        • Will schedule this for ~1.5 hours.
  • Anything missing?
    • LiteBIRD? Spectrometer? Shaul: Don't seem critical.
      • Lloyd: agree, won't help write report.
  • Lloyd: Lost Marilena for neutrinos. Dan/Lloyd: replace with Joel Meyer
  • Julian: Our gender balance is (unsurprisingly) poor.
  • Shaul: Invitations can start going out. Put online once there are verifications.
