Mail Settings

Important mail settings

These are the essential settings for most mail programs (the terminology may vary within different programs).

Incoming mail

  • Mail server type: IMAP
  • Server name: mail.physics.umn.edu
  • Use secure connection (SSL)
  • Port 993

Detailed Instructions

Outgoing mail

For outgoing mail, you can either use Physics settings (for which brief directions are given below) or the central university serevrs (for which more exhaustive instructions are available). Using the Physics server will result in faster mail delivery times to Physics addresses.

Physics settings:

  • Server name: mail.physics.umn.edu
    • Port: 587
    • Select “TLS”
    • Use Physics username and password

University settings

  • Server name: smtp.umn.edu
    • Configure using ACDS email guide
    • Port 587
    • Select “TLS”
    • Use your university X.500 username and password

For more detailed directions for configuring individual mail programs, consult the ADCS E-mail Configuration Guides.

POP mail

POP3 service is also available on the mail server, but is not supported in any way. If you have problems with POP and cannot resolve them yourself, reconfigure your email program to use IMAP as described in these guides.
