Physics and Astronomy-related software

Many packages such as cernlib, root, geant, etc are provided via the UPS product manager. Use the command ups list -aK+ to get a brief listing of all such packages. More information is available in our introduction to UPS.

Mathematica

Supported on Tru64 and Linux. Start Mathematica using the command mathematica for the XWindows notebook-style interface, or math for the terminal-based interface.

MatLab

Supported on Tru64 and Linux. MatLab is started using the matlab command. Extensive online help is available.

CERN program library

On Tru64 and Linux systems, cernlib is available through the UPS “setup” command (“setup cern”). Several versions of cernlib may be available - use “ups list” to find out which.

After running “setup cern”, some environment variables (eg CERNLIB) will be set to enable location of the libraries.

ROOT

Available via the UPS “setup root” command.

Documentation for ROOT may be found at http://root.cern.ch/.

MN_FIT

Fitting and plotting package, available on Tru64 and Linux. More info at the MN_FIT homepage.

Physica

Supported on both Tru64 and Linux. Info at http://www.triumf.ca/physica/html/homepage.html.

Note, run physica by typing “run_physica” (this is a wrapper script which sets essential environment variables before starting the program).

Supermongo

Plotting program, available on Tru64 and Linux - type “sm” to run. More info at http://www.astro.princeton.edu/~rhl/sm and possibly from http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/users/rstanek/sm.html.
